NUMBER 10 - CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER
Captain America: Winter Soldier excels as escapism that acts to progress the Marvel Cinematic Universe while also an excellent stand alone film. The questions of trust thrown at structures of authority are poignant in modern times, the humour is scattered and well balanced and the action will reward repeat future viewing. Another quality film from Marvel that bodes will for the future of the Russo Brothers and and the Star Spangled Superhero.
NUMBER 9 - 20,000 DAYS ON EARTH
Sitting in around the 90 minute mark, I felt the film could have gone twice the length without any issues. Cave is a fascinating subject and warrants more analysis, Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard have captured his pure essence. The film could not be more appropriate for the man if it came in a black suit. Stories about Nina Simone and German fans pissing on stage are worth price of admission alone. A film for any fan of any of Nick Cave’s projects, Australian music or the creative process in general.
NUMBER 8 - THE RAID 2: BERENDAL
Gareth Evans isn’t a well known Director, his Imdb page is shorter than a Napalm Death song, but his career is sure to skyrocket based upon the success and acclaim being thrown at The Raid 2. The action genre has arguably been stale for years, currently more CGI fights and old action heroes slowly clog up a genre that one pushed film forward (I’m looking at you Expendables) but The Raid is like a breath of fresh air. Don't blink or you will miss something.
NUMBER 7 - NIGHTCRAWLER
Film can be escapism, a few hours in the dark where you forget about the world around you, engross yourself in the lives of others and feel something you couldn’t normally. Nightcrawler is a different film, it shows a gritty reality that makes you consider the human condition, your own morality and what a dollar is worth if somebody is willing to pay it.
NUMBER 6 - GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY
Guardians Of The Galaxy is a fun movie. It is popcorn fodder full of entertaining characters, dynamic writing and bright visual effects. It is not a perfect movie by any means, certain characters, continuity and even plot devices can be dissected with multiple viewings, but if you are looking to poke holes in a film which includes a talking raccoon and an infinitely powerful stone, you probably aren’t the target audience for the film, and are part of the minority that hasn’t seen it yet.
